In 2019, the UN Global E-Waste Monitor estimated that the world generates 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste annually. This number has continued to rise, with Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) becoming the fastest growing waste stream.
E-waste is one of the most toxic and harmful types of waste, posing substantial risks for both humans and the environment.
In Guiyu, China, home of the largest e-waste disposal site, lead levels in various water sources were found to be 2,400 times higher than World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Water Guidelines. Similarly, stillbirths in Guiyu occurred 4 times more frequently than in Xiamen.
